Hen party of 12

We spent three nights in the hotel for a hen party over the last bank hol weekend in May. A conveniently located hotel amongst the hustle and bustle of the shops market squares and places to eat. Walking around was very easy. Staff were very friendly, though our rooms were very dated compared to the impression set in the glamorous lobby. A few of the rooms in our party were more modernised - maybe the hotel is going through a slow refurb. Our room smelt of smoke though so do ask for non-smoking rooms when booking - we didn't realise smoking was allowed in hotel rooms. Also irons are not available in rooms or by room service, you could only send your items to be ironed during the morning laundry service which was around half 7 every morning - not a great time! No kettle in the rooms either which made having a simple cup of tea or hot water a tad difficult. Room temp got quite cold at night we weren't sure how to put the heating on. Roof top pool was fab plenty of sun loungers to accommodate us all. Pool water temp was freezing - it is not heated but still a nice bonus to have! Didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment on the food. Was fine for what we needed for our short stay.

A great place to see Madrid

If you want to walk around Madrid, the best place to stay is this hotel. Specially the warm months, the roof garden, bar and swimming pool is a place I will never forget. As a visitor more than 7 times, there are a couple that I choose to stay somewhere else and truly missed it. (not regretted though). Rooms are well designed, classy, clean and lately renovated. Bathroom was excellent. People were smiling and whiling to serve, give directions, book /propose activities, reserve restaurants etc. Breakfast is typical Spanish. It had everything and everything was served the right way. I definitely recommend this hotel.

Excellent, olde worlde hotel

Spent 3 nights here. Had 2 rooms as we were a group of 3. We booked standard rooms but were on the 8th floor - maybe we were upgraded, but it certainly wasn't mentioned if he were

Entire hotel was spotlessly clean. It's an old grand hotel with thick carpets, solid wooden doors with heavy brass attachments etc and the room decor matches this so if you're looking for modern, minimalist this is not for you

Our rates included breakfast which was at least as good as any other hotel breakfast I've had on the European continent. I'm not sure it's worth €19, which is the price if you haven't got it included, but it is quite good.

Nice lobby and bar which matches the rest of the hotel with ornate chairs and waiters on full suits.

My only small complaint is the wifi. They charge €12 per 24 hours for in room access. In this day, this is crazy! But if wifi in the room is important for you just budget it in. Wifi is free on the lobby but very slow especially at peak times with dozens of guests sitting in the area using it.

Finally the fitness room is very small with 1 treadmill, 1 cross trainer, and one stair machine alongside 1 multi gym and one bench with one set of free weights. On one evening there was me and 3 other guests using the gym and it was a bit of a squeeze

Rooftop pool area looked amazing but it was unseasonably cold & wet during our stay so we could not use it.

Great hotel in a central part of Madrid

We (my husband, father and I) had reserved a corner junior suite at the four star Emperador Hotel on the Gran Via in Madrid. Theoretically it is easy to find (if we had followed out satnav's instructions!) and it has valet parking (though there is an underground car park just around the corner, though for us it was easier and quicker to have the car valet parked). We also had help with our luggage.

Check in was very quick and efficient, as well as friendly, and the staff speak very good English (though I did try out my limited Spanish!).

Our room was on the 1st floor and it was very big. A large King size bed and a single "put you up" bed for my father. There were also a settee, coffee table, arm chairs, a desk, a drinks shelf with mirror, etc. The air conditioning was excellent and quiet. The bathroom was also very large with an over bath drencher shower and another shower head. The sleep quality was good, and the sound insulation as far as noise from other guests was excellent. The windows are triple glazed which I am sure usually would keep out most of the usual traffic noise. However, the nights we stayed there Madrid people were celebrating Athletico Madrid's win over Barcelona, so were driving up and down the Gran Via beeping their car horns!

There is a roof top pool and bar with excellent views over Madrid. We did not use the pool, but we did take a look and it was very clean and a good size.

The hotel does not have a restaurant for evening meals, but there are a lot of good restuarants less than a 5 minute stroll from the hotel on Calle Preciados (turn right out of the hotel and walk down Calle San Bernardo as far as the Hotel Mercure, then take the 3rd street on the left).

Breakfast on the lower ground floor was very good with a large selection of different breakfast items - fruit juice (though sadly not freshly squeezed), cereals, sliced fresh fruits, yoghurts, bread, rolls, cakes, croissants, cold meats, cheeses and hot food (bacon, sausages, eggs), and tea and coffee. The waiting staff were helpful and efficient and the servery was kept well stocked.

The hotel is just a few minutes walk from the Plaza Espana (statue of Don Quixote and Sancho Pancha), the Temple of Debod (Egyptian temple moved from Egypt to Madrid in the 1960's) and the Royal Palace and Cathedral. The Madrid Hop On Hop Off City Sightseeing Bus also stops a short distance from the hotel on the Gran Via, so the hotel is very well and conveniently located for the major sights.

Check out was quick and efficient and our car was delivered outside the hotel within about 10 minutes of asking, which was excellent. The bill was also very reasonable, particularly for a 4 star hotel conveniently located in the capital of Spain.

All in all I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anybody visiting Madrid on holiday or business.
